Our Philosophy
A venue for the community, led by the community.
ZODIAC is an independently owned, LGBTQ+ Club & Events Company — and a community space, founded by Jade Phoenix Hoskins (Lady Phoenix), a Trans woman. This page is our commitment, in her words.
Our commitment.
Our defining mission is to create welcoming, safe and inclusive venues and events for the LGBTQ+ community; to create jobs and opportunities for staff and performers; and to raise awareness of LGBTQ+ issues.
We are not just a club or an event space — we are a place that supports people in all walks of life, by being a safe and inclusive space for all.
“Owned by the LGBTQ+ Community. For the LGBTQ+ Community.” — The ZODIAC line we stand on.
On awareness.
We represent our community through our bartenders, our owner and our door staff. We don't only welcome representation — we actively encourage it in our venue through our performances and ongoing community work.
We are creating a space and mission in the public eye where more trans people are empowered to tell their stories. We want much broader representation, awareness and visibility of a diverse range of trans identities and experiences — in public life and media.
Jade, the mother of ZODIAC, is striving to make a positive difference in every aspect of her life for the community.
Truly trans-inclusive.
Our commitment to an LGBT community space is to ensure we are truly trans-inclusive — with LGB and T people taking active steps to challenge homophobia, biphobia and transphobia within the communities, and ensuring LGBT spaces and events fully involve and include trans people.
We want the community to continually inform us, challenge our decisions and come forward to be part of the change.
We believe in a society where transphobia is unacceptable and is challenged by everyone. To achieve this, it's vital to have a greater range of allies listening to, and speaking alongside, trans people, and challenging transphobia when they see it and hear it.
Whilst we believe every night should be a night for all letters of our alphabet, we continually change, grow and come together as one community — ensuring our trans friends have a place that welcomes them with open arms.
What we stand on.
-
Radical inclusion
Everyone is welcome. ZODIAC is an LGBTQ+ establishment first — guests are visitors to the community's home.
-
Trans & non-binary affirmation
Founded by a Trans woman. Pronoun respect, gender-neutral facilities, and Trans pride events are central to who we are.
-
Community ownership
Independent. Local. LGBTQ+-run. Choosing ZODIAC means supporting a community-owned small business.
-
Celebration & joy
Our events are about fun, cabaret, music, and queer joy. The tone matches the room.
-
Safety & respect
Clear etiquette, firmly held. Zero tolerance for transphobia, misgendering, or harassment. Peace and love is not passive.
How we speak.
These standards apply to our team, our performers, and our guests.
Always do
- Use they/them when gender is unknown or unspecified.
- Introduce and respect pronouns.
- Refer to trans people using their chosen name and current pronouns only.
- Use gender-neutral language — guests, everyone, folks, all.
- Respect trans, non-binary, and two-spirit identities as self-defined.
- Challenge assumptions about gender in all communications.
Never do
- Assume gender from appearance.
- Put chosen names or pronouns in quotation marks.
- Reference someone's previous name, pronouns, or gender identity.
- Out any person without explicit permission.
- Ask about medical history, procedures, or anatomy.
When in doubt: Use they/them — or mind your own business.
